Logo Design Tips

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 1 : A logo is the image which represents a company or its product. It's function is to create a memorable, recognizable impression on the mind of a potential client or customer. A logo is essentially at the heart of a corporate identity.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 2 : There are three basic types of logos, which can be used alone or combined within one design:

  • illustrative logos (a logo which clearly illustrates what your company does),
  • graphic logos (a logo that includes a graphic, often an abstraction, of what your company does), and
  • font-based logos (a text treatment which represents your company)

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 3 : Creating a logo is always a process - though different designers have their own methods. Many designers will begin by sketching thumbnails or playing with shapes on the computer screen, until something "clicks" and they follow that path to see where it leads. One way to start is to select a shape which represents the concept of the company, and begin playing with it. The idea is to come up with something interesting or clever, whether a viewpoint which is different, or an unusual combination of shapes.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 4 : Many designers prefer to developing logos beginning with, or consisting entirely of text. By experimenting with fonts, size, shapes they seek to find an interesting way to represent the company using the form of letters. Again, simplicity is extremely important - this is not the time to use fancy decorative fonts. Whether alone or combined with graphic elements, the text in a logo must be easily readable at small sizes.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 5 : Once a form for the logo has been defined, color needs to be considered. Again, color for a logo should remain simple. You can always get fancy with the web version, but a good logo must work well in one color and gradients of that color. The color should enhance and support the form of the logo - for example, various shades of blue on the sides of a 3D box should be the same as they would in real life.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 6 : The right logo, with the right characteristics, will boost your visibility, credibility and memorablity – which means more business for you!

  • Consistency in use of your logo, tagline, materials. Repetition of similar elements, used in the same or similar ways, helps people to remember who you are and what you do.
  • Memorability, so that your logo stays at the forefront of your potential clients' minds. That way, they'll think of you next time they have a need.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 7 : The right logo will boost meaningfulness, uniqueness and professionalism of our branding – which means more business for you!

  • Meaningfulness, so that your logo can spread the message about the distinguishing characteristics of your business.
  • Uniqueness, which helps you stand out from the crowd. For example, if everyone in your industry uses a particular symbol (i.e., travel agencies often use globes in their logos), try to use something else – that way, your logo doesn't just look like everyone else's.
  • Professionalism, in the quality of the graphics, the printing and the paper on which your materials are printed.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 8 : The right logo, with the right characteristics, will boost timelessness, contrast and scalability of the branding – which means more business for you!

  • Timelessness in your logo will ensure that you don't have to redesign your logo in just a few years and that your investment and equity in your design will be lasting.
  • Contrast between the colors in your logo – and not just in terms of hue, but in terms of value as well, so that it translates well either to black and white or greyscale and colorblind people are able to see it.
  • Scalability, so that your logo looks equally good on both a business card and on a sign for your business (or a billboard!), and at every size in between. Your business's name should be legible at different logo sizes – be sure that your designer chooses a font that is easily readable.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 9 : In marketing, a brand is the symbolic embodiment of all the information connected with a product or service. A brand typically includes a name, logo, and other visual elements such as images or symbols. It also encompasses the set of expectations associated with a product or service which typically arise in the minds of people. Such people include employees of the brand owner, people involved with distribution, sale or supply of the product or service, and ultimate consumers.

  • Brand Identity: also known as the graphic "face" of your business. Small businesses certainly benefit from creating a logo and a consistent set of marketing materials. So having an iconic logo and a strong visual vocabulary used throughout your materials greatly increases your business's memorability — and makes it more likely that your customers will think about you

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 10 : This is the process of defining your business: Who you are, what you do, who you can best help, and what makes you different from your competition. You must have all of these factors well-defined to create an effective brand. If your thoughts in all of these areas aren't clear, concise, and well-put, then you can't hope to effectively direct your customers' thoughts about your business.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 11 : Everyday we come across plenty of different types of logos. Some of them are quite popular like the ones of Coca Cola, Nike etc. These logos are, in fact, so popular that the company and its products cannot even be visualized without their logo. Then there are some logos that might not be quite popular but definitely creates a long-lasting impression on the viewer. And then there are probably plenty of more logos which we overlook and forget. Whatever the case is, the bottom-line is almost every company, product, website or service today uses some sort of logo, designed to target specific audience or create an impact.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 12 : Logo design is the illustration of the business. It is considered to be the tool which gives the first impression of a business. Before starting a business much consideration is given to the logo design. The logo should be designed according to the name of the company and the business product. Logo design has many advantages including:

  • Logo design promotes the business in the market.
  • Logo design helps in attracting potential customers to the business.
  • Logo design gives a unique identity to the business.
  • Logo design is as important to the business as the business name.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 13 : A logo design should be eye catching and simple. It should be designed using simple color pattern and short text; it is unprofessional to make the logo unnecessarily flamboyant. Logo designs can be created by the business owner using software or a hired professional. Having a logo designed by a professional is a wise investment because the designers have the knowledge to create logos befitting the business. It is also necessary that the company logo be innovative and a similar logo design is not being used by any other business.

There are also many types of logo design software. These are computer programs that are represented with a friendly user interface and help in generating logos according to the color and size specification of the business. The most up to date software incorporate several files with predefined logo designs. The disadvantage of using this software is that they might produce similar types of design for different businesses. Once a logo design is created it can be registered and copyrighted for the business it represents.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 14 : There are two reasons you need an unique logo. First, you want people to see a visual representation of your company or business. When people see your logo, you want them to immediately associate that logo design with you and no one else. You don't want your logo to be a piece of clip art because someone might associate that clip art with your competitor. Using an image or a typeface that is all too common defeats the purpose of having a logo, and can even have a negative backlash among your audience who would view your company as unimaginative.

Second, a unique corporate identity is important because you don't want to violate any copyrights or trademarks of other companies. If your logo is too similar to another company's logo, it is in your best interest to modify or redesign the logo. What it would cost you in time and money to have it redone would be very small compared to winding up in court for a copyright violation.

If your logo is simple and unique, and if people visit your web site repeatedly, people will associate your logo with your company. When done properly, a logo is one of the simplest ways to make a brand name recognition impact.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 15 : You've decided that you need a logo - either to enhance your established image, or to create a new one. You should decide if you want an illustrative logo (a logo that includes an illustrative representation of what your company does), an iconic/graphic logo (a logo that includes a graphic - or abstract - representation of what your company does), or a font-based logo (a dynamic type treatment that is unique to your company).

Do consider the future usage of your logo (stationery design, etc) as this can determine the technical set up of your design and might pose some design limitations.

LOGO DESIGN TIPS 16 : Keep in mind that a powerful logo design:

  • has a strong, balanced image with no little extras that clutter its look;
  • is distinctive and bold in design, making it easy to see at a glance;
  • has graphic imagery that looks appropriate for your business;
  • works well with your company name;
  • is done in an easy to read font;
  • communicates your business clearly; and
  • looks good in black and white, as well as in color.
