BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 1 : Designing a basic brochure – how hard can that be? For good graphic designers, the answer is a lot tougher than you think. The key to making a professional brochure is to stick to the basics.The purpose of brochure may vary from business to business. Some are designed to display services, whereas others are focused on selling an idea. No matter what the focus of the brochure is, it needs to be readable, intriguing, and functional. The brochure must grab a viewer’s attention and hold it long enough to deliver the pertinent information.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 2 : "Brochure" is French, and it comes from brocher, meaning to stitch. According to The American Heritage Dictionary, a brochure is "a small booklet or pamphlet, often containing promotional material or product information." Brochures aren’t always small. Sometimes they’re quite large. As for brochure contents, they vary greatly depending on the situation. A brochure definitely can be more than a pamphlet or small booklet, coming in all shapes, sizes and a range of folds.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 5 : Although a brochure can do a lot, keep it simple. Zero in on your audience and purpose, and the rest will fall into place. Consider the format, page size and how the brochure will fold. Decide on visuals, fonts, colors, paper stock and other design characteristics. As for copy, put a strong headline on the cover. Capture the right tone, and make sure copy has a logical flow. As a rule, keep sections short, incorporating plenty of subheads. Finally, make sure you know how your brochure fits into your overall marketing program.

Every paragraph must contain at most three sentences and its total space must not exceed 10 lines. Brochure designs also take on different text formatting rules and you have to be familiar with them. When a brochure is intended to be a direct sales generator, it must be exciting and convincing. Brochure designs for direct mail business must also utilize white space around text and images sufficiently. Small ticket items are being sold to excite customers, not to hammer them with vast information about a certain product or service.

On the equipment brochure the font for the title can be selected for its bold rounded shape without serifs (Bordeaux Bold), hopefully conveying the message of strength and usefulness. The party brochure title can be in a bold simple script (Brush Script), not too fancy and frilly since the business caters to the backyard and small wedding crowd, yet fancy enough to give the feeling of something special. It is a good practice to use no more than three different fonts in any one brochure. One font carries the message while the other fonts serve as design accents. Bolding or italicizing a font does not necessarily count as a separate font. However, only use bold and italics as emphasis to impart clarity to the message.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 12 :The front cover is the most important part of the brochure. The cover should jump out and grab the customer’s attention and in effect, say "take me, read me". Make it visually appealing by using simple designs and well chosen fonts. Include your logo and business name. Consider using a design similar to your store sign and/or stationery. This is an effective identity tie-in with future correspondence.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 13 :The back cover of the brochure is a great place to extend an invitation for the customer to call. You might summarize your business philosophy, make a mission statement or express your personal appreciation for their business. The back covers of the brochures contain a map, a statement about the quality of equipment and service, some graphics and a signature after a personal closing.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 14 :The purpose of a brochure is to educate the customer about the subject of the brochure and encourage that customer to get in contact with you.Main function of a brochure-A call to action and to educate in detail. The brochure should get you the appointment with the customer, but you must make the sale.

BROCHURE DESIGN TIPS 15 :You want your brochure to sound and look professional. You can accomplish this without using "stiff phrasing" or a formal tone. To most readers, "professional" is just plain boring. Pick your best customer and pretend you are speaking only to him/her. Your brochure shouldn't be a textbook, it should be a conversation between friends.

Some brochures deliver the message "We’re your quality business to deal with", or "We’re the greatest, so deal with us. We look at brochures as a form of visual communication inviting people to interact with us.
